Evelyn R. Engel

Evelyn R. Engel was born on June 29, 1944, in Salisbury, Missouri to parents Lenhardt and Vivian (Young) Engel. Evelyn entered into the presence of her Lord on September 29, 2022, in Denison, Texas at the age of 78. Evelyn graduated from Glasgow High School in Glasgow, MO, and Grayson Co. College. She moved to Bryan County from Kanas City, MO to be closer to her grandchildren. Evelyn married Alvin Jack Wallace on July 27, 2019, in Durant. Although their time together was short, they lived and loved life together and treasured each other. Evelyn had many jobs over the years all involving service to others. She was never afraid of working. She had a heart for serving others. She enjoyed being active in the community and at her church, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. One of the many accomplishments included being a charter member of Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church in Fayette, MO which was started at her kitchen table with two of her cousins and a friend. Evelyn loved to sing and paint for fun but mostly she loved to read. She served on church council many times and The Soup Kitchen for several years at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. She also had perfect attendance for Sunday School for 12 straight years. Although Evelyn had only one child, Shannon, over her lifetime she tucked under her wing anyone who could use a mother like figure or an extra grandmother’s touch. She was known to many as “Nanna Evelyn”. Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents Lenhardt and Vivian Engel; eldest sister Geraldine Shoemaker and spouse Ron Berger. Evelyn is survived by her husband Jack Wallace of the home; daughter Shannon Phelps and husband Steve of Kenefic, OK; grandchildren Chad Phelps and wife Jenni, Randall Phelps and wife Kayla, Maya Sharp and husband Triston and Emersyn Phelps; sisters Barbara Elliott and husband Joe and Marilyn Adams; Aunt Hazel Engel and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. A celebration of Evelyn’s amazing life will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Durant, Oklahoma. Rev. Timothy Brady Eggleston will officiate.
