Services for Joe Steve Ashford will be Fri., Dec. 18, 2009, 2:00 PM, at the Coleman Church of Christ with Tandy Troutman and Don Willingham officiating. Graveside services will be Mon., Dec 21, 10:00 AM at Westlawn Memorial Cemetery in Borger, TX, with Kenneth Hawley officating. Joe Steve Ashford was born May 14, 1913, in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX, to Joe Boyd Ashford and Emma Lou Coward Ashford. He moved with his parents to Kenefic, OK, when he was three years old. He graduated from Kenefic High School and married high school sweetheart, Vera Pauline Slaton on Nov 18, 1933. He lovingly cared for Vera during a 15-year illness. She preceded him in death on Feb 10, 1997. Steve farmed near Kenefic until 1946 when they moved to Borger, TX, where he was a maintenance foreman for Phillips Chemical Co. Until he retired on May 1, 1978. Steve was a good carpenter and woodworker. He built their home in Borger and after retiring, his greatest joy was helping others. On Sept 26, 1998, Steve married long-time family friend, Ruby Shipman Wilson and moved to Durant, OK. In 2002, he helped build a house on land near Kenefic which had belonged to Ruby’s parents. He loved being on the farm and making everything neat and clean. Steve was a faithful member of the Coleman Church of Christ and attended services as long as he was able. After he became ill, he asked every day if it was church day. Preceded in death by first wife, Vera Pauline Slaton Ashford; four brothers, Ruben Marselle, William Glen, Benjamin Boyd "Buddy" and Clifton Haden Ashford; two sisters, Letha Gibson and Marie Lucille Behrens. Survived by: wife, Ruby Shipman Wilson Ashford of Kenefic; daughter, Anna Joyce Barnett of Irving, TX; son, James "Jimmy" Wayne Ashford of Borger, TX; grandchildren, Sherry Barnett & husband Jose Blanco of Atlanta, GA and Gregory Barnett and wife Cindy of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren Christopher Barnett & wife Amy of Midlothian, TX and Shanna Barnett Schmitz and husband Dan of Dallas, TX; step-great-grandchildren Dustin Andrews & wife Brooke of Southlake, TX, and Kristi Andrews of Oklahoma City and three step-great-great-grandchildren. Steve is also survived by step-daughter, Byrdie Wilson Hawley & husband Dan of Kenefic, step-grandchildren Danetta Shelburne & husband Ian of Abilene, TX, David Hawley & wife Lisa of Cedar Park, TX and Kenneth Hawley & wife Deborah of Lubbock, TX, and twelve step-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Gregory Barnett, Christopher Barnett, Dustin Andrews, Jose Blanco, Dan Schmitz and Joe Ashford. PDF Printable Version
